Sometimes, as a homeowner, you experience plumbing issues. But how can you differentiate between a small plumbing issue, and one that is going to require a major plumbing repair? This is a brief list of some of the most common residential plumbing issues, and the normal course of repair that is required.

Dripping Faucets

Dripping faucets are one of the most common plumbing issues in a home.  Sometimes it can be caused by a simple worn out washer or o-ring. However, they can also be caused by a corroded assembly, or improper installation of the faucet. If you don’t see any visible corrosion, and everything appears to be properly seated and installed, it’s probably a bad o-ring.

Running Toilets

A running toilet is a huge water waster. It can waste up to 200 gallons per day if allowed to run for the duration of the day. It can be caused by a worn out flapper seal, improperly sized flapper chain, or a refill tube issue. Check the flapper chain first, and if it isn’t the flapper chain, you are most likely dealing with a flapper seal or refill tube problem.

Low Water Pressure

If you’re experiencing low water pressure in your home, chances are it’s time to call a plumber. Low water pressure is usually caused by pipe corrosion, an undetected water leak in your home, or a drain or sewer clog.

Slow Or Clogged Drains

If it is just one slow or clogged drain, that means it’s a localized issue and is more than likely a clog. The most typical are hair clogs in the drain that catch soap and other material in them and won’t allow drainage. If it is multiple or all of the drains in your home, this signifies a much larger issue. Multiple drains usually means that there is a sewer line problem. You will need to immediately contact your plumber, because sewer will back up into your home, and overflow onto walls and floors.

Water Heater Not Producing Hot Water

if your water heater is producing some hot water, but it isn’t enough for showers or laundry, the chances are pretty high that you have a water heater that’s inadequate for your sized home. If there is no hot water being produced at all, you more than likely have had a heating element fail, or there are loose or broken electrical connections on the water heater. Either of these issues will require a plumber to repair.
