If you’ve ever needed to install a new washing machine in your home, then you know it can be tough. You need to purchase the machine (often times at an appliance store), and then hope that your current washer hook-ups will work with the new model. And if they don’t, you’re back to trying to figure out how to get your old one out and the new one in.

How to Install a New Washing Machine

Before you go shopping for your machine, there are some questions you’ll need to ask yourself. First, will your new washing machine need a power source (either on its own or sharing one with your dryer)? If so, where is the best place to put it? Second, what kind of washer do you want? How many cycles will it have? How big is the opening in which you’ll install the washer? Will it require additional plumbing such as a drain hose or washer hook-up connections?

It’s also important to remember that your new washer should be able to fit into the space in which you’re installing it. Measure the new spot, then measure the old one and make sure that they’re about the same size.

Tools You’ll Need for Installing a New Washer

Here’s the list of tools and supplies you’ll need to install your new washing machine: A power drill with a screwdriver bit; a pair of adjustable wrenches; some wood blocks or other supports; an Allen wrench (for most newer machines); a flathead screwdriver; and an electrician if needed.

The Process: Installing the Washing Machine

Step 1 – Remove Your Old Washing Machine

First, you must remove your old washing machine. The process is easy but varies based on whether it’s front-loading or top-loading. With a front loader, you must remove the door and then remove the outer basket. With a top loader, it’s just a matter of pushing your old washer out from the back.

Step 2 – Install Your New Washing Machine

Once you’ve removed your old washing machine, get to work installing your new one: First, mark on your floor plan where you’d like to install the new unit. Next, attach the washer to your floor (if you’re not using a pedestal stand), hook up the drain hose and hook up wires (if needed). Then set the machine in place and secure it with screws. Attach the door, route your drain hose into an appropriate connection and then turn it on.

Step 3 – Test Your Washing Machine

After you’ve installed your new washing machine, be sure to test it out before putting any clothes in it. Start with a load of towels or rags to get used to how your new washer functions. Then do a load of darks and another load of lights to see how it washes each. These will give you a good idea of how the machine will clean future loads.
