The cost and inconvenience caused by burst pipes is considerable. Just a small fracture can lead to wastage of gallons of water, damaging plaster, masonry, carpets and other contents of your home.

But what makes pipes burst?

The answer is that water that comes from outside the house is colder especially during the cold seasons. This cold water makes the pipes to contract which in turn causes leaks in the areas of the pipe that are weakened with time.

There is no practical way to stop the contraction of the pipes. Experts recommend that you be mindful
of your plumbing system. Check if they are leaks when the temperatures change.
While we cannot stop the already existing leaks caused by a drop in
temperatures, there are several things that you can do to prevent pipes from
freezing and ultimately bursting. Here are some helpful tips:

  1. If the weather is extremely cold, keep one or
two taps running slowly all the time – the kitchen tap is a good one to leave
running-Water continuously moving through the system will help prevent the
    pipes from freezing.

2. Mostly, the pipes located near an outside wall
or window are the ones that freeze. To prevent this, direct warm air to the
cold areas of your home beginning with basement.

3. If your kitchen sin is attached to an outside
wall which is often the case, leave the cabinet doors open to allow warm air
into the cabinet

4. Disconnect your hose from the outside faucet

Be sure to disconnect your hose from the outside faucet
as leaving it connected prevents water from draining out of the hose bib and is
more likely to freeze and cause the bursting of the pipes.

5. Install heat tape

This product is ideal
during cold weather. It works by warming pipes. Though you can install it
yourself, it is best to consult a professional plumber so that it is done
correctly.

6. Seal air leaks that allow cold water into your
home especially where pipes are located.

With extreme cold, even
a small opening can let in enough cold air that make a pipe to freeze and
burst. Therefore, look for air leaks around pipes, dryer vents and electrical
wiring and use insulation or caulk to keep the cold out.

7. Prevent temperatures in your home from dropping below
30 degrees especially in the areas where water lines are located.

What to do if the pipes are already frozen

If you notice a frozen pipe, do not wait for it to burst, turn of the main water supply then gently thaw the affected pipe by introducing heat on the area using a space heater, hot water or space heater. You should not attempt to thaw the pipe with an open flame such as a blow torch.

In case the pipe bursts, turn off the water supply and place a bucket to catch the excess water. Avoid using any electrics that maybe have affected by the escaping water. Then immediately contact a professional plumber to do the repairs.
