What are toilet tablets?

Toilet tablets are blocks of solid disinfectants that dissolve rapidly in water. Toilet tablets usually come as a gel or granules to dissolve into the toilet’s plumbing system. They work by killing off bacteria and eliminating odors from the area. They can be used for hygienic cleansing after using the washroom and for cleaning and disinfecting toilet bowls and cisterns.

Toilet tablets contain between 5% and 10% polyvalent metal salts. When they contact the ammonia released by the waste, a chemical reaction occurs that releases hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and chlorine dioxide (ClO2). These oxidizing agents kill germs on contact. In addition, several enzymes contained in these tablets cause organic matter to break down more quickly, minimizing odors from sewerage systems or septic tanks. The active ingredients do not affect the pH level of the treated water.

Toilet tablets are available in various forms for different applications:

  • toilet or urinal blocks
  • Liquid gel or aerosol tablet that is sprayed into toilets and other areas to be disinfected before use, for example, by housekeeping staff.

Some brands also contain perfume to mask unpleasant smells.

Disinfecting toilet tables should be placed regularly in public washrooms (e.g., one tablet per user per day). They should always be present alongside conventional non-disinfectant detergents used for general cleaning purposes (such as Excell Fresh Bleach) to provide effective secondary protection against germs. The recommended dose – 1 tablet per user – ensures sufficient active ingredients are available after dilution in the wastewater.

Toilet tablets are suitable for use in low-flush toilets where water conservation is required. The rate at which they dissolve depends on the amount of water flowing past them, but it can be controlled by placing or switching tabs higher or lower in the cistern.

In addition, they can sometimes remove stains on the bowl itself and dissolve blockages within drains and pipes that may have accumulated over time. Although this is more difficult than buying conventional drain unblocking products at home improvement stores, if you try this method first, you’ll find it much easier than attempting DIY drain unblocking methods at home.

Toilet tablets are an environmentally friendly way to help ensure that your septic system or sewer connection keeps running smoothly. Using tablets is a simple process that requires no work on your part after you drop them in the cistern. Make sure not to mix up different brands of the tablet as they could cancel each other out and decrease their effectiveness, so stick with one brand if possible.
