Plumbing noises are not only a nuisance but can also be an indication of plumbing problems; some more severe than others. Plumbing system noises may originate from drain pipes, faucets, shower heads, supply pipes or fixtures. The causes of these squealing, hissing and whistling sounds may be due to plumbing errors, blockages and broken or loose parts. These strange noises need to be investigated and the necessary repairs carried out to ensure that the plumbing system is running at peak efficiency.

Whistling Sound

A common plumbing noise is a whistling sound that occurs when a faucet is turned on or when the cistern is refilling right after flushing the toilet. Showerheads too may produce this sound when in use and this usually means that they are clogged. Water makes a whistling sound when it flows rapidly through an obstruction or a narrow restriction. This happens inside a faucet when the screw holding the washer is loose. Replacing the washer and the brass screw quickly fixes the problem. If the whistling sound originates from the cistern, take the tank’s cover off and observe the inside of the cistern while it fills after flushing. If the whistling sound stops once the tank is filled, then, the ballcock valve simply requires an adjustment.

Banging Pipes

This is a distinct cluttering sound made by metal pipes. It is commonly referred to as water hammer. Water travels through pipes at a high speed and when this flow is suddenly stopped, the momentum and force of the flowing water causes it to bang against the insides of the pipes. This makes the pipes vibrate and rattle. The sounds are magnified when the pipes are improperly secured. This plumbing problem can be fixed in a number of ways; making the pipe straps snug and tight, inserting a rubber pad between pipes to prevent rattling or installing an anti-hammer device also known as air chambers.

Hissing Faucets and Screeching Valves

Faucets produce a loud hissing noise when turned on due to high water pressure. When water shoots out of the faucet, it is an indication that it is too pressurized. Water pressure needs to be monitored and maintained at the required level. Water running at a very high pressure can easily damage water pipes and other home appliances. Check the water pressure regulator to ascertain that it is properly set and working correctly. It should be reset if necessary.

High water pressure can also be the cause of screeching valves. However, this noise is most commonly associated with a defective faucet. Replace loose or worn out parts to stop the valves from screeching.

Gurgling Drain

Gurgling drain sounds are produced when the drain system is blocked. A sink or bathtub drain makes the gurgling sound for a while after using it. Sometimes, the gurgling sound may come from multiple drains or even from a different drain while an unrelated water appliance is in use. Hair, grease build-up, dirt and sediment build-up could be the cause of the partial drain blockage. This sound should be resolved once the drains have been cleaned and cleared. Gurgling sounds emanating from different drains simultaneously may be an indication of a venting problem.
