People usually do not try to replace their water heater unless they do not give hot water or due to any other technical problem. But, if you are planning to replace your heaters in a couple of months then you must know the recent regulations passed by federal government US according to which energy efficiency of the water heaters should be higher. Though it can be a beneficial rule for you but it can be more confusing to choose new heater for the homeowners.

As per the new regulation passed by Department of Energy in April 2016 the water heaters should comply with energy efficiency standards, whether they are used in residential or commercial establishments. According to the Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy of America, the heaters used in homes should also have a moderate increase in efficiency standards as they are not much different from other heaters. But larger heaters with 55 gallons and more storage capacity will have to use latest technologies to achieve the desired energy level. Depending upon the technology used this change can reduce your power consumption bills.

Though some people consider it as a terminology used by governments still it can be beneficial for the homeowners as up to 20% consumption of their energy consumption is due to the use of heaters for heating water. The new regulations for water heater will be applicable on all types of residential water heaters with tank including the appliances run on gas, oil and electricity. Most heaters without any tank are already complying with efficiency standards.

Usually every home in US has a water heater with 55 gallon or less water holding capacity. The energy efficiency of such units will be averagely increased by 4% as per new regulation. ACEEE has further suggested that you can find wide variety heater compatible with new regulations in the market to choose from.

The energy efficiency standard of the water heaters that can hold 55 gallon or more water can be higher than earlier. But such things make it more confusing while selecting heaters for your home. Homeowners may choose form them to reduce their energy consumption even if they do not know how to use their gas condensation technology and electrical heating pump etc. Water heating appliances with heat pump are also known as hybrid units as they transfer heat from the environment into the water. According to ACEEE, escaping heat, below 140 degree F, from the condensing water heating units can be regained by cooling the escaping gases to convert water vapors in to water.

In this way, according to the new regulations, homeowners can buy a bit larger water heater than 55 gallon holding capacity to replace their smaller existing units to meet the energy standards set by the Department of Energy US in 2017. But you will have to do some homework if you are going to buy one to replace your larger water heating unit as they may need more space to place them in your home. It is better to consult a plumber or contractor before purchasing before buying the new water heater for your home.
