Water quality is the condition and characteristics of water, usually drinking or swimming water. There are many factors that determine, and affect, the quality of water. In many homes across the world, the water quality is not very good. This can be caused by whatever is found in the water.

One thing that can affect water quality is the amount of bacteria in the water. Some bacteria makes its way into drinking water when it rains, because most of the water we drink is groundwater. Other bacteria is harder to kill, which allows it to live in the water. Another thing that can affect drinking water is the build up of calcium, which makes the water harder. This isn’t dangerous, but it can make things, such as showering, uncomfortable.

In some cases, pesticides can contaminate drinking water. Pesticides are used in areas where groundwater is collected or where surface water systems are located, such as farms or gardens. Not all pesticides are dangerous, but they can make the water quality become very poor.
In other cases, lead can also contaminate water. This happens when the water comes in contact with corrosive plumbing. The acceptable amount of lead allowed in drinking water is 0.010 mg/L. Signs of lead poisoning include headaches, irritability, and blurred vision. If you believe that your water has too much lead then it’s important to get it tested so that the lead can be removed as soon as possible.

There are countless more things that can affect water quality such as the location, amount of chlorine in the water, nitrates found in it, and the water’s pH. A pure pH level is 7, and groundwater is usually around a 6.8 or so. Making sure that your water’s quality is acceptable is important for your safety. As long as all levels of dangerous substances are low, the water should be good to use.
