Pipe lining is an excellent way to rehabilitate and fix old or damaged pipes without doing major construction or remodeling, which often can be prohibitively expensive or cause large amounts of property damage. This is because pipe lining requires no actual digging or replacement of pipe. Instead, pipe lining can be installed into already existing pipe, even pipe that is old and corroded. Pipe lining is appropriate for most residential purposes, often being used for potable and graywater systems. It is reliable enough to also work on most sewer systems, and due to its flexibility can be adapted to fit most other circumstances by changing materials and installation methods.

In order to line a pipe, the first thing required is a thorough inspection by a qualified plumbing service to determine exactly how damaged the pipes are. Once it has been determined that pipe lining is the best option, the water will be stopped and as much water as possible is drawn from the pipes. Heated air is then pumped into the pipes to remove any remaining moisture. The pipes are usually then sandblasted, though this can depend somewhat on the condition of the pipe. Once this has happened, the pipe lining will be inserted into the pipe so that the curing process can begin. Overall this process is fairly quick and will take somewhere between a few hours and a few days, depending on the severity of the damage.

This lining is often made out of epoxy and is often referred to ‘Cured In Place Pipe’, or CIPP. The benefits of CIPP are many, but likely the most important benefit is that CIPP does not require the removal or disturbance of old pipes, and thus minimizes property damage. Also because of it’s minimally-invasive nature, CIPP is quite time and cost-efficient when compared to the labor needed to fully replace old pipes.

The benefits of CIPP go far beyond saving time and money. Because of it’s restorative nature, CIPP also can be applied to very old and very corroded pipeline and will smooth the inside, allowing for better flow of water and debris through the pipe and thus reduceing the risk of clogs. Because CIPP coats the interior of the pipe, it also can help reduce corrosion damage and thus extend the life of the pipe. CIPP is an excellent choice for many projects and for those with serious, hard-to-reach plumbing issues pipe lining can be the perfect solution.
